Bexar County District Attorney Susan Reed announced today that Shawn Ruiz Puente, age 32, and Jenevieve Ramos, age 28, were both indicted today by a Grand Jury in Atascosa County.
These indictments are the result of a collaborative investigation that includes the Texas Rangers, Atascosa, Bexar, and Wilson County law enforcement agencies. District Attorney Susan Reed has pledged her assistance to Rena Pena, District Attorney for the 81st Judicial District, who has jurisdiction over Atascosa and Wilson Counties. In this joint effort, District Attorney Susan Reed and her office have been cross designated as co-counsel by lead counsel District Attorney Pena to work with him and his office in the prosecution of the cases in Atascosa and Wilson Counties.
The charges arise from the December 8, 2013, multi-county high speed chase that began in Bexar County. San Antonio Police Officer Robert Deckard was in pursuit of Puente and Ramos when he sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Officer Deckard died on December 20, 2013 as a result of his injuries. Both Puente and Ramos were indicted by the Atascosa Grand Jury today on one (1) count each of Capital Murder and one (1) count each of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer arising from Officer Deckard’s death.
A Wilson County Grand Jury is expected to return indictments against Puente and Ramos for Attempted Capital Murder of Poth Police Officer R.J. Sanchez. The attempted capital murder charge is a result of the same December 8, 2013 pursuit in which the defendants fired gunshots at Officer Sanchez while fleeing their vehicle in Poth, Texas.
Capital murder is punishable by life in prison without parole or death as determined by the jury.
