Felony Indictment Returned for Off-Duty Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputy Who Shot and Killed Mathew Jackson

Today the Bexar County Grand Jury returned a felony indictment against Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputy Anthony Lamont Thomas, age 38, for the first degree felony offense of Murder in the death of Mathew Jackson, age 29.

On August 31, 2013, at approximately 4:35 a.m., Anthony Thomas and Mathew Jackson were involved in a minor traffic accident on Loop 1604 near Lookout Road. After pulling both vehicles to the side of the road, Mathew Jackson approached Thomas’ vehicle and Thomas opened fire, striking Mathew Jackson one time. Jackson died at the scene. Anthony Thomas was not on duty at the time of the shooting and was in his personal vehicle, but he was wearing his Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputy uniform and badge.

Murder in Texas carries a range of punishment of not less than five years and not more than ninety-nine years or life in the Texas Department of Corrections Institutional Division and a fine not to exceed $10,000.
