Biography

Judge Tom RickhoffJudge Tom Rickhoff graduated from St. Mary’s University in 1966 and Law School in 1969. He then joined the Army and volunteered in Vietnam for the 196th Combat Infantry Brigades as a Judge Advocate. In 1985, he was certified as an Equal Opportunity Officer and Military Judge while serving as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Prior to private practice, in 1974, Judge Rickhoff became a Special Trial Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Organized Crimes and Racketeering Strike Force in New Orleans where he was a First-Chair Prosecutor for Mafia and Gambling Operations, and then Chief of Special Crimes in the San Antonio U.S. Attorney’s Office. In 1978, he was elected as the Bexar County District Court Clerk, and was named “Politician of the Year” by the San Antonio Light. Two years later, Judge Rickhoff was appointed as the Judge for the 289th District Court where he remained until he ran for the Fourth Court of Appeals where he served for a decade.

In 2001, Judge Rickhoff was appointed as the Judge for Bexar County Probate Court 2 where he has remained. He received the highest number of votes on the ballot in 2014 and seven previous elections.

He has authored numerous historical and legal articles, including “The History of ‘Bigfoot’ Wallace,” which ran in the 2000 San Antonio Express, and “Dangerous Minds” which appeared in the 2014 Texas Bar Journal. He has also received numerous public service awards and has served on many community boards.

Judge Rickhoff married Carol at Mission San Jose in 1970, and together they have raised five children and have eight grandchildren. Of his children, Hans is a lawyer with Akin Gump in Washington, D.C. and San Antonio, specializing in government affairs. After serving his country in Iraq, Franz returned, married Melissa, a teacher, and was a motorcycle constable. Now he works with Veteran Affairs Law Enforcement. Fritz speaks Czech and is a businessman in Prague. Erika is a physical therapist, and her husband is a lawyer with Thompson/Knight in Dallas. Liesel, a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UT and UT Law, runs the Rickhoff Law Firm specializing in probate in Austin.
